Once a derelict site, it has now been lovingly transformed, retaining the ambience of this historic building.

In 2012, Basmati acquired the famous ‘Labour in Vain’ public house in Westergate, near Chichester. Once a derelict building, it has now been given a modern new look, while taking care to keep its warm and welcoming character. More is to be done, including an extension to the building and the opening of the BBQ garden in the summer.

The restaurant is located on the main A29 road from Chichester to Bognor and just past Fontwell. With excellent food and a high standard of service, we hope the restaurant will continue to be a great addition to the area.

The À la carte Indian menu at Basmati Restaurants cover a wide area of the Asian sub-continent, including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The menu hosts the traditional range of Indo-Asian restaurant cuisine as well as unique home style Bangladeshi and Indian dishes.

Our chef’s cooking ethos is a back to basics approach, returning to traditional methods of cooking. A manner that has been used in every Asian home for generations, with attention to subtle flavours and seasoning. Preparation and cooking of food and breads is on a daily basis, so you can be assured of freshness. The chef’s signature dishes are only available at Basmati Restaurants, and nowhere else in the UK.

"Visiting my family, we went for a belated Birthday dinner for my Brother and an early Birthday dinner for myself. My Sister suggested Basmati and I gladly agreed. Having eaten here some time back, I expected good things. I was not disappointed. Whilst the decor was not as fresh as my first visit (particularly the carpet), the meal achieved the same high standards. Expertly served by Ali and the team, our meal was delicious. We were six adults and two children. We ordered five mains and lots of side dishes and there was plenty to go around. Rather than the kind of Indian fare where everything can taste kind of the same, here you taste every flavour. I particularly enjoyed my Wild Lemon Lamb dish, my Brother's lamb shank (a new dish) and Mum's Chicken Tikka Shobuz, each "Signature Dishes". Thoroughly recommended. With drinks, the meal came to around £25 a head and it was well worth every penny. Recommended!"

"We’d always driven past this restaurant and said one day we’ll go in there. In my experience any restaurant where it’s a bit of the way is usually at one end of the scale or the other. They either don’t care or its outstanding because they rely on people coming back again and again.. Please to say that we had one of the best Indian meals we’ve ever had, tasty, not stupidly spicy to cover up for poor ingredients, just fantastic and we don’t say that lightly. It’s had to find anything negative to say, except for the portion size, it’s a little on the smaller size and somewhat leaves you wanting more. The quality though it just excellent. Don’t drive by like us and say one day, just do it. We’ll definitely be going back.."
